mute-net.sourceforge.net
MUTE (Open Source) - Simple, Anonymous File Sharing. To avoid exploitation by groups that spy on user activity to gain marketing data then even extort money from filesharers too. When this program is fully developed and has a large userbase, filesharing will in theory at least, be completely unstoppable. :)

Gwren AntsP2P
AntsP2P (Open Source - Java) Programmed by Gwren (IRC). This is similar to MUTE but includes sender to receiver encryption too, making it a little more secure. This project seems to be developed more rapidly than MUTE. If you need Java, goto www.java.sun.com or just install the Freenet Project with Java.

www.freenetproject.org
Freenet (Open Source - Java) - creates the unique privacy extreme, open source and serverless Freenet network. Fully decentralised, does not even need host caching servers or cache websites to re-connect! A large download (requires Java Runtime) and requires a moderate system to run. It runs in your system tray and acts a bit like a browser plug in. Your browser communicates to the Freenet program which in turn connects to the peer to peer Freenet network. You can browse freesites and even publish them privately and free. Currently very slow but if privacy is what you need then this seems the way to go. Current WIP is NGR - Next Generation Routing, which in tests has speeded up the network by about three times. There is some highly controversial material on Freenet, you have been warned. I am extremely optimistic about the future of this project.

http://kceasy.com
KCeasy (Open Source) - nice open source multi-network program. Has an interface much like Ares, well thought out and easy to use.

The Real Shareaza
Shareaza (Open Source) - supports the Gnutella1 and Gnutella2 serverless networks (in Cool Links above). The beta supports Bittorrent and the Edonkey2000 network too. Established in 2002 June, it really is the Ultimate File Sharing. Amazing GUI, features to die for, runs on old systems. Everything is free here, no ads or spyware either. Share your files on Shareaza's own new network www.gnutella2.com and help promote this great client.

emule-project.net
eMule (Open Source) - connects to the largest pair of networks, the www.edonkey2000.com and www.overnet.com networks (Overnet is called Kademlia in eMule). But eMule contains no spyware and no ads. You should also check out this slightly modified version emuleplus.sourceforge.net.

www.winmx.com
WinMX - supports the OpenNap server based network and it's own closed WPNP - Win Peer Network Protocol network. Best Napster like replacement. If you loved Napster you'll love this. It does everything Napster did and much more. No ads or spyware but the website sometimes has popups, which we all know are annoying. (Closed down after Cease & Decist letter.)

www.streamerp2p.com
Streamer - uses a serverless UDP network, free webcasting tool and they sell the excellent Spheres of Chaos game. Exellent if you want to broadcast to the world for free. Remember those pirate radio stations you used to listen to on your old FM radio? They all got shutdown by the authorities. Well there was some justification as radio bandwidth is limited, but here on the internet the bandwidth/number of stations is almost limitless. So setup your station and get broadcasting to the world.

www.peercast.org
Peercast (Open Source) - uses a modified Gnutella1 (0.6) serverless network, another free webcasting tool. Similar to the one above but has weblinks for radio stations. I use both but tend to find more content on the peercast network. They both allow receive and broadcast on a 56K modem but broadband is definitely recommended to receive/broadcast stations with higher sound quality. Note that the sound quality of the OGG stations far out performs that of MP3, especially if they are in stereo.

www.utorrent.com
uTorrent (Micro Torrent) - The latest and the greatest fasted P2P transfer protocol ever. Uses websites for searching, saving bandwidth for transfers. And because links are from a website, most are verified safe already, but you still need check and be careful.

There are many file sharing networks and clients that I am well aware of, that contain and even force their users to install spyware to use the program. They will not be listed here. It is clear these services can exist without spying on their users. - Remember there are no central servers to support and maintain with peer to peer software.
