Kerio Personal Firewall - Great firewall
here. Exellent fully featured, low system
resources. Not for the novice. |
Killad - The best popup killer bar non, uses
barely any memory. Make sure you use -t
Terminator mode. There are many fakes that charge
money for this program so make sure you use the
link above to download your free copy. For ease
of use you should create links to the Killad
executable and place them directly in your IE
Links toolbar. Use the red [X] icon with -t
switch to load Killad (ON.lnk), and the grey [X]
icon with -u switch to unload (OFF.lnk). |
ClickOff - Loads as a system tray icon with
right click menu like Killad. This freeware
program clicks off annoying, usually error
messages. It is useful for auto-minimizing the
"Dial-up Connection" window that pops
up while re-dialling. Can also be used as a popup
killer too. If only the features of this could be
added to Killad, very handy. |
PopLock - excellent popup killer.
Doesn't catch'em all but has a unique feature,
hold mouse button allows popups.
You don't have to keep your other hand on the
keyboard. Full popup control with just one hand
on the mouse.
Very small program and automatically loads/closes
with Internet Explorer.
|
PopLock feels
very much like a browser patch to cure popups.
|
CiDial - Dial-up Connection
dialer. If your dial-up ISP cuts you off every
two hours, this is the program for you.
It also eliminates those "Dial-up
Connection" boxes that block your view when
re-dialling.
Don't those modem dialling bleeps drive you
crazy? Ever wanted to get rid of them? Well you
can! If you are a Windows98 user (may work on
later Windows versions too), follow these
instructions:
Start, Settings, Control Panel, then click
Modems. Select your modem and click the
[Properties] button. Click the /Connection\ tab,
then the [ Advanced...] button. Now on the bottom
of this box there is an -Extra settings- entry
bar. Type in "atm0" (without quotes),
then click [_OK_], [_OK_] again, [Close] and the
beeps are gone. :)
Use CiDial with Task Schedular. In your task
properties, use the advanced button and repeat
task option. Repeat task every 2minutes, and tick
to close task before your cut-off time, eg 08:00.
Task Schedular will load CiDial at your desired
time, restart CiDial after a re-boot &
automatically re-connect, then close CiDial to
avoid peak hours.
Use all the tricks above to fully automate your
dial-up connection, giving it an "always
on" feel.
|
Stay Live 2000 - Another dialer type program
but this one automatically syncronises your PC's
clock too. Uses slightly more memory than CiDial
above, and does not get rid of the "Dial-up
Connection" boxes that can block your view.
If you are running a DOS program in full screen
mode, the "Dial-up Connection" box
makes your view switch back to the Desktop. Use
CiDial instead (above) to avoid this, if it is a
problem for you. |
NetLaunch - For those poor users who have
dial-up with 2hr cut off's. This program runs in
the system tray but the icon can be hidden.
NetLaunch automatically re-dials when
disconnected, can connect at scheduled times and
can start your internet programs for you. Note
that if you connect with a program other than
NetLaunch, NetLaunch will not re-dial
automatically when disconnected, leaving you
offline. This is the only reason I havn't used
it. |
YahooMessenger - Audio conferencing, ideal
for CB users. Like CB radio there are no
moderators on Yahoo Chat, so it's not for the
easily offended. But if you just want to laugh at
a good argument, this is the place to find one. |
Ad-aware - has a free version suitable for
removing almost all spyware. There are some
suspicious cookies around too, that have far too
late expiration dates. If you want more features
you should try Spybot - Search & Destroy. (I
do not see the need for ad-blocking though, only
popups.) You should never need either of these if
you are careful what you install. |
BlackViper - excellent internet related info.

Filtering Guide. |
